4l80E

After tearing down the TH350 I wanted to do a 4l80e. I had a couple 4l80e transmissions: a “LS” era 4×4 unit I got for free and a early RWD unit I got for $50. I decided to tear into the 4×4 unit first as I wouldn’t be able to run it as is anyway so I wouldn’t do any harm.

For a size comparison TH350 on left 4l80E on right. You can also see the Th350 has a tail housing where a driveshaft slips in but the 4×4 4l80 instead has a transfer case bolted to it.

4l80 is electronically controlled.

Coming apart.

4th gear clutch housing assembly.

4th gear clutch pack (friction and steels)

The cart was getting heavy! Started to wonder if it might collapse…

Here are the guts assembled on the bench just to see how it looks.

Putting it back together. I couldn’t get it to go in without assembling the rear half and buying this vice grip to hang it all from while it dropped in the case.

Just the pump to go.
