No Highs…No lows?
With the seats upgraded the absolutely terrible stereo system needed to go. It was without a doubt the worst OEM system I have ever owned. I fully expected that at least one of the speakers would be blown but to my surprise they all (visually) were fine.
I had a closet full of car audio stuff from my younger days so I pillaged it for goodies. A friend hooked me up with some old school Orion subs and a nice Kenwood head unit. I only had to buy the sub box, 2 mounting kits, rear speakers, and a wiring kit. Less than $300 out of pocket.
Because the OEM radio is tied into the body control module, you have to find a source of switched power (ignition key on/off) to tell the radio when to tun on and off. Fortunately GM left one nearby under the passenger footwell. I completely reewired the whole car. I firmly believe that no head unit provides enough power to drive quality speakers so I use the head unit as a preamp with 4v RCA outputs to an old school 5 channel Memphis “Baby Bell” amp. From there I ran new speaker wire to Polk MoMo compoent speakers in the front doors and Memphis compoents in the rear sail panels.
The custom subwoofer box I bought is designed to seal the passenger compartment from the trunk so the base hits HARD. And it does just that. I can’t believe how good it sounds for a pair of 10″ subwoofers.
Boom boom
Glad I could help.
