Getting the Gas Line Run

Now that I had access to the crawl space and the framing for the ceiling was in place I needed to get the natural gas line run out to the shop before we started hanging steel. A couple years prior we started to smell natural gas near the gas meter outside. I called MG&E and had a nice chat. I was curious about how gas distribution worked and the guy I was talking to was happy to share. In the end he said that our gas meter would be changed out so I requested they bump up the size as I was planning to add a shop heater and they did that for free.

Everybody has a line they don’t cross doing things themselves for me that is running natural gas lines. I have changed appliances and fixed leaks before but I’ll leave making a ~150′ gas line to the professions with the knowledge and tools. Especially because this line needed to be spliced into the main feed into the house, then run across the entire house, then underground to the shop, then up through the shop!

I made the appointment to have the gas line run for a Tuesday thinking I could dig the trench over the weekend. We happened to get solid rain for four days leading up to it so Charlotte generously offered to dig the trench for me the night before as she typically gets done with work a couple hours earlier.

She dug the trench down to 24″ where they put the gas line then we put direct burial cat6 cables 18″ down.

Charlotte can fit through the windows.
It runs all the way to the back of the shop.
