Supercharging the FRC 2.0 Part 2

I had originally planned to do a little tuning of my own before making the 1.5 hour drive to Waukasha to drop the car off for tuning but the old tune was close enough so I decided to leave it alone and just take it (fairly) easy. I went for a couple drives and even at part throttle it was driving circles around the n/a version of the car I had become used to.

We decided to drop the car off the weekend before the Monday morning tuning appointment. Unfortunately we were in the middle of a very hot and humid couple weeks and I was concerned with the car overheating on the drive there. So as we set off I decided to leave the AC off as that tended to make the car overheat in the past. I kept my eyes on the coolant and oil temp and eventually started paging through the rest of the DIC. Since I knew the MPG readout was pretty accurate based on tracking my fuel mileage all summer of 2018, I reset it to see how it was doing. To my surprise it lingered in the high 20s going down the interstate so because traffic was moving slowly anyway I decided to see how good I could get it over an extended distance.

I managed to average 29mpg over 30 miles driving along with traffic around 70mph! Simply amazing in a cammed 6L engine that I was expecting to make ~700whp. I was baking in the heat with the AC off, but I was enjoying the drive, and amazed at how good the stereo sounded at 70pmh with the windows open!

Eventually I gave in and decided I’d try the AC out with a plan to turn it off as soon as the coolant temp jumped over 200 degrees. To my surprise over the last 20 miles on the interstate it never got over 200 degrees. This new kit is obviously breathing a lot better. Temps even stayed good in stop and go traffic as we neared our destination:

After dropping it off I spent the next 3 days waiting for a phone call hopeful it would be to say everything went great and it made the power I was hoping it would. Finally at noon on Wednesday I called to get a status since and they said it was almost done and I could come pick it up. They did not say how much power it made so my anxiety level was still up there but at least I knew nothing broke! Miraculously I was able to take the afternoon off and secure a ride there from Mark on a moment’s notice.

We walked in the door and there it was waiting for me. We walked into the office and were handed the dyno slip without a word being spoken:

Awesome! It made a little bit more than I was hoping for. They commented about how unassuming the car is with the stock mufflers still on it until you get into the throttle. I gotta say I agree…the car is perfect for what I wanted.
